What is IELTS?

International English Language Testing System or IELTS is an internationally recognized exam of English Language for expatriate English speakers. IELTS test has two test types

All the applicants must choose the kind of IELTS test they wish to register for. IELTS is of two types, Academic and General Training test.

Academic Test: This test is designed for individuals immigrating to an English-speaking country for educational purposes.

General Training Test: This test is chosen by people seeking employment or work in international institutions.

In terms of paper format, both types of tests evaluate the four skills mentioned before. However, the difference lies in the reading and writing modules of the test. IELTS Test Format

The IELTS test evaluates the individual’s English skills based on Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing modules in three hours.
One can appear for one of the two types of IELTS test, that is, Academic Test and General Training Test. Listening and Speaking modules share the same pattern in both types. However, the other two modules are different for each test type.
The writing, reading, and listening segment of the test are taken consecutively without any breaks.
The speaking module can be taken on any day in the range of a week prior or week after the other test.
The total time given to solve the test is 2 hours and 45 mins.

Who Can Appear For IELTS?

Any individual that has a valid Visa and wishes to migrate to countries like the USA, UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada whether for educational, professional, or residential purposes can appear for the IELTS test.

IELTS Eligibility Criteria

The applicant should be 16 years old or above and must have a passport to appear for the test while there is no maximum age restriction. Also, if a school demands an IELTS score then an exception in age can be made.
A person belonging to any gender, country, or background can apply for the test.
There is no minimum education criteria for the IELTS imposed by the British Council and IDP.
Individuals have an unlimited number of attempts.

How IELTS Test is Scored?

The individuals are evaluated on the scale of 0-9. Ofcourse, a higher score means better skills. Each country has its own minimum score. However, typically a score equal to 6 or higher is accepted by most countries. The scores from each of the four modules are called the Raw scores. By calculating the average of Raw scores, the final score is obtained.
